The original Moke was produced from 1964 to 1968 at the BMC factory in Longbridge, Birmingham, England. 5,276,630 copies of the Renault 5 were produced. Production of the R5 stopped in December 1984, with the launch of the Super 5. However, to meet the demand for 5-door models not available in the Super 5, Renault decided to relaunch production of the R5 5-door, the Lauréate GTL!

The ephemeral 5 Lauréate models are distinguished by a specific presentation: bumpers, rear air extractor grilles and upper grille painted body color, side stripping, Fergat sport wheels (Alpine type).
